Inside Elections Becomes Third Major Race-Rater to Move Iowa Governor’s Race in Rob Sand’s Favor to “Toss-Up”
DES MOINES, IA – Today, Inside Elections, a top national race-rater, moved Iowa’s 2026 gubernatorial race in Rob Sand’s favor, from “Lean Republican” to “Toss-Up,” citing Rob Sand’s fundraising strength and an in-state political environment ready for change after a decade of one-party rule. In its analysis, Inside Elections also noted that Republican nominee Zach Lahn remains “untested” and faces “vulnerabilities surrounding his current ties to Iowa” as he fails to answer for his living situation in Kansas.
“Rob Sand has built his campaign around bringing people together, listening, and putting public service over partisan political games. That message is resonating with folks from across the political spectrum, and this latest ‘Toss-Up’ rating change reflects what we’re seeing across the state: Iowans are ready to rotate the crops.” said Deputy Campaign Manager Emma O’Brien. “This race isn’t about party labels — it’s about ending a decade of a failed status quo that has left Iowa worse off, and choosing leadership that puts people over politics. That leader is Rob Sand.”
Earlier this spring, both Cook Political Report and Sabato’s Crystal Ball also moved the race to “Toss-Up,” with Cook describing the contest as a “barn-burner.” In its analysis, Cook also called Rob an “aggressive campaigner,” and pointed to his willingness to go everywhere, including his regular appearances on conservative media platforms and visits to all 99 counties. National Journal also named Iowa one of the top five gubernatorial races most likely to flip in 2026, ranking it as Democrats’ second-best pickup opportunity and calling Rob “the strongest Democrat running statewide anywhere in the country this cycle.”
Since entering the general election, Rob has launched his annual 100 Town Hall Tour across all 99 counties; announced the support of more than 100 registered Republicans — known as “Rob-Publicans” — who have publicly endorsed his campaign; introduced fifth-generation farmer and cattleman Dave Muhlbauer as his running mate; and challenged his opponent to 100 town halls and four debates statewide. Rob also enters the general election with three times as many Republican donors as his opponent, a record-breaking fundraising operation, and an unprecedented grassroots network prepared to flip Iowa’s governor’s office this year.
