Iowa Governor’s Race Ranked Most Likely to Flip in 2026
“State Auditor Rob Sand has cleared the Democratic field for governor, entering general-election territory with unusual momentum for a Democrat in Iowa.”
DES MOINES, IA – New race ratings from the nonpartisan National Journal place Iowa among the top five governor’s races most likely to flip in 2026, ranking it as the second-best pickup opportunity for Democrats this cycle. The report points to candidate for governor Rob Sand’s strong candidacy, noting how he has entered “general-election territory with unusual momentum for a Democrat in Iowa.”
Iowa’s fifth-place ranking — up from seventh place this November — puts it alongside top battleground states with key governor’s races, including Michigan, Georgia, and Wisconsin — further showcasing the growing competitiveness of Iowa’s governor’s race heading into November due to Rob’s strength as a candidate.
“After breaking records at every turn, the momentum behind Rob Sand only continues to grow,” said Deputy Campaign Manager Emma O’Brien. “A decade of one-party control has left Iowa with the worst economy in the nation, public schools in the middle of the pack, and with the number one growth rate for cancer in the country. Iowans are ready to turn the page on the politics as usual that has failed them, and want a leader who will take the state in a new direction. Rob Sand is that leader.”
National Journal has previously called Sand the “strongest Democrat running statewide anywhere in the country this cycle,” noting his focus on “pragmatic governance over partisanship.” After announcing in May, Rob’s candidacy spurred Cook Political Report to give Iowa a rare “double-jump” rating shift to “Lean Republican,” as did Sabato’s Crystal Ball.
