Rob Sand for Iowa

6/5/2026

DES MOINES, IA – In the first week of the general election, nominee for governor Rob Sand is keeping up the momentum, announcing his annual 100 Town Hall Tour and unveiling a new policy proposal that would require all public officials to hold public town halls; participating in the Iowa Association of Business and Industry Conference’s gubernatorial forum in Coralville and sharing his vision with hundreds of business leaders from across the state; attending the World Pork Expo and enjoying the spread; challenging his opponent to four gubernatorial debates; and sharing his vision for a better and truer Iowa on Iowa Press.

As Rob traveled the state and announced big plans for the general election, his opponent skipped events and hid behind the screen on social media, battling in comment sections with Iowans who raised concerns about his frequent flights to his primary home in Kansas.

The Gazette: Rob Sand: Require Iowa elected officials to hold town halls

  • State elected officials in Iowa should be required by state law to conduct public town hall events with their constituents, Democratic gubernatorial candidate Rob Sand says.

  • “I think the big picture here is that I think people deserve accountability. They deserve answers from elected officials,” Sand said in an interview with The Gazette ahead of Wednesday’s policy announcement. “And if you’re not willing to stand up in front of people and explain your work, then maybe you shouldn’t be in public service.”

  • Under Sand’s proposal, statewide elected officials would be required to conduct 20 town halls each year, and state legislators would be required to conduct five annually in their districts. The events would require public notice, be free to attend, open to the media and include time for non-scripted questions that were not preselected.

  • The proposal is part of Sand’s “Accountability for All” policy, which he published in conjunction with the announcement of his 2026 statewide tour. Sand’s second spin around the state as a candidate — he did the same in 2025 — will start June 17 in Winneshiek County in Sand’s hometown of Decorah and conclude Sept. 30 in Polk County, just more than a month ahead of the Nov. 3 election.

  • “And I should add, this is a bipartisan problem. I think that both the Democratic and the Republican parties have done a terrible job of just letting people sit in office until they die there, basically. And it is a leadership problem. The parties need to do a better job, and if they’re not going to do a better job, then we should just make it the law.”

Iowa Capital Dispatch: Democratic governor candidate Rob Sand warns that Iowa faces ‘fiscal time bomb’

  • With the primaries over, Democratic gubernatorial candidate Rob Sand said Thursday his general election approach will remain focused on bipartisanship and finding “reasonable” solutions for Iowans as he faces off against businessman Zach Lahn in November.

  • Sand said his top priority is figuring out how to address the ongoing budget deficit “right before the bomb explodes,” which he said could be done by finding new sources of revenue for the state. He pointed to his proposal to legalize and tax recreational cannabis products as one way the state could generate funding.

Des Moines Register: Rob Sand warns of ‘fiscal time bomb’ at Iowa business leader forum

  • Two days after the 2026 primary election, Democratic gubernatorial hopeful Rob Sand warned that Iowa faces a “fiscal time bomb” as the state’s revenues decline and it uses reserve funds to cover a nearly $1.3 billion deficit.

  • Sand, who is currently the state auditor and the only Democrat elected to statewide office in Iowa, spoke to the Iowa Association of Business and Industry during their annual conference in Coralville on Thursday, June 4, answering questions submitted by Iowa’s business leaders. Surprise GOP nominee Zach Lahn was also invited, but was unable to due to the quick turnaround from Tuesday’s primary election.

  • “I think it’s really important for us right now to recognize that cliff of savings, that that deficit is about to go out,” Sand said on Thursday. “I would liken it to a fiscal time bomb. The fuse is the surplus. That fuse is burning at a rate of $1.3 billion every year.”

  • “Inherently, you want to see where you are before you decide what direction you want to go in,” Sand said. “A lot of these recent tax changes we’re going to need to understand before we might want to even consider looking at other changes.”

Sioux City Journal: Rob Sand calls for four debates with Zach Lahn including in Sioux City

  • Democratic gubernatorial nominee Rob Sand is calling for four debates in four different cities with Republican nominee Zach Lahn for the November general election.

  • “Team Sand will work with individual news outlets to determine the host of each debate in each market,” Sand said. “If our opponent does not accept the invitation for the four debates, Rob Sand will instead do an additional town hall for every debate he doesn’t commit to, giving Iowans additional opportunities to ask him non-pre-screened or scripted questions directly.”

  • Sand also challenged Lahn, a businessman from Belle Plaine and Hinton, Iowa native, to hold 100 of his own town halls “with advanced public notice, open to the public and to members of the press.”
