Rob Sand Visits North Liberty Community Pantry As Food Assistance for Over 267,000 Iowans Set to Stop Today

NORTH LIBERTY, IA – Today, candidate for governor Rob Sand visited the North Liberty Community Pantry facility for a tour and a discussion about the impending loss of food support for over 267,000 Iowans across the state due to the federal government shutdown.

“While our elected officials play politics in DC, hundreds of thousands Iowans across the state are set to lose access to food. That means kids going to school hungry and putting more pressure on our community resources,” said candidate for governor Rob Sand. “Iowans going hungry because our elected officials won’t work together to find a solution – there’s no better example of the complete failure of the two-choice system that puts politics ahead of people. Thanks to Ryan and others at North Liberty Community Pantry for showing me around and for stepping up when our officials fail.”

“Food pantries – thanks to the generosity of our local communities – are stepping up to keep Iowans fed during this emergency. However, lawmakers must also step up to ensure long-term support through SNAP continues,” said Ryan Bobst, Executive Director of North Liberty Community Pantry. “Not just through the government shutdown, but also transitioning the state to the new cost-sharing realities of the reconciliation bill passed this summer, which places SNAP’s future at risk. Otherwise, this current emergency will be what every day looks like in just two short years. Our neighbors deserve to be free from hunger, not suffer because of political gridlock.”

As hundreds of thousands of Iowans are set to lose access to food, the federal government is entering one month of this shutdown. Throughout his campaign, Rob has been sounding the alarm about the dangers of the two-party system that has failed Iowans and Americans across the country by prioritizing politics over public service. According to the USDA, 267,158 Iowans are set to lose access to food.
