CAMBRIDGE, IA – Last week, nominee for lieutenant governor Dave Muhlbauer toured the Ember Recovery campus in Cambridge, a non-profit that supports young Iowans across the state and focuses on mental health, substance prevention and recovery, and support for youth. Dave also participated in a roundtable and heard from alumni, parents, and staff who all have been impacted by substance use on their personal experiences and how the state can best support young people who struggle with this issue.

As a father of three and a parent who has had a child go through these struggles, Dave cares deeply about drawing attention to the work of the Ember Recovery campus and resources for young Iowans in crisis.

KGAN: Muhlbauer shares personal connection to Iowa youth recovery center

  • Dave Muhlbauer, the Democratic candidate for Lt. Governor, said its not his first time at Ember Recovery Campus. As the group discussed substance abuse recovery for Iowa’s youth, Muhlbauer shared how the facility helped his own son.

  • “I walked in the door and, I mean I almost teared up a little bit because I mean I realized that this helped one of our kids get in a good place again and get help the help he needed and on the right path,” Muhlbauer said.

  • Ember is a recovery center that helps with substance abuse or mental and behavioral health challenges. Muhlbauer said his son was in crisis last fall and they weren’t sure what to do. However, because of his connections as a Crawford County Supervisor he said they were directed to Ember. He said he wants more families to know what help is available.

  • During the discussion the group talked about ways they could improve recovery support for Iowans. That included more education, more family involvement and more out reach to rural communities that may not have access to resources.
