  • Be judged mentally incompetent to vote by a court, or

How to Register to Vote

To pre-register to vote, complete a voter registration form and return it to your county auditor’s office.

The form must be signed. If you are not physically able to sign the form, use a rubber stamp or a mark you use regularly. You may ask someone to sign your name for you as long as the person is with you when signing the form and does so at your request.

If you are a college student, you may choose to register to vote at your home address or at your college address. You cannot register to vote at both. Your county auditor will send you a voter registration card within two weeks.

You can register to vote online by visiting the Iowa Department of Transportation website (you will need to have your driver's license or non-operator ID available)

Pre-Registration Deadlines

You may cast an absentee ballot in person at your county auditor's office before any election.

You must vote your absentee ballot at the auditor's office. You cannot take the ballot home with you. For voters who need assistance in marking their ballots, an accessible ballot marking device is available at the county auditor's office.

Early voting dates

You can vote early at your county auditor’s office during regular business hours starting on October 14. The last day to vote early is November 2. All county auditors are open on Saturday October 31 for special early voting hours.

Some counties have satellite absentee voting stations to provide in-person absentee voting at places other than the auditor's office. You must mark the absentee ballot at the satellite station and leave it with the officials. You cannot take the ballot home with you.

All satellite stations must be accessible to people with disabilities. To find out whether a satellite station is planned for an election, contact your county auditor or iwillvote.com.

Voting on Election Day

Polls are open from 7:00 am to 8:00 pm on Election Day. If you are in line before 8PM, you can stay in line & vote.

Registering to Vote on Election Day

You may register and vote on the same day during early voting and on election day. You must go to the correct polling place for your current address on election day. If you are unsure of your polling place, Find Your Precinct/Polling Place.

At the polling place, you must prove both who you are and where you live. The best way to do this is with your valid Iowa driver’s license with your current address printed on it. See examples below to show your polling place for proof.

Examples of Proof of Identity:

If you do not have an Iowa driver’s license, you may use a photo ID that is current, valid, and contains an expiration date. The following are acceptable IDs:

  • Iowa non-operator ID
  • Out-of-state driver’s license or non-operator ID
  • U.S. passport
  • U.S. military or veteran ID
  • ID card issued by employer
  • Student ID issued by Iowa high school or college
  • Tribal ID card/document

Proof of your current address:

If your photo ID does not contain your current address, you may use another document (paper or electronic format) to prove where you live if it contains your name and current address and is current within 45 days. The following are acceptable proofs of residence:

  • Residential lease
  • Utility bill (including a cell phone bill)
  • Bank statement
  • Paycheck
  • Government check or other government document
  • Property tax statement
