Rob Sand for Iowa

5/20/2026

DES MOINES, IA – Yesterday, candidate for governor Rob Sand announced raising a record-shattering $9.6 million in the first months of 2026 — surpassing the total raised in all of 2025 and more than tripling the previous record for the most money raised during the same period in the state’s gubernatorial campaign history. Rob also outraised all five Republican opponents combined by four-to-one, entering the general election with a massive $18.3 million war chest — compared to just $707,000 for the next-closest campaign.

  • Nonpartisan elections analysts at Cook Political Report earlier this year moved Iowa’s governor’s race from its “leans Republican” rating into the more competitive “toss-up” field.

  • The ad is part of what the campaign described as a six-figure buy across television, streaming and digital platforms. The spot focuses on Sand’s work uncovering misspent taxpayer money and prosecuting public corruption while serving as state auditor.

  • The campaign noted Sand has introduced legislation each year calling for mandatory prison time for public officials who steal taxpayer money and pointed to the Public Innovations and Efficiencies, or PIE, program created during his tenure as auditor.

  • Alongside the ad launch, the campaign announced it raised more than $9.6 million in 2026, with nearly $18.3 million cash on hand heading into the general election campaign — setting what the campaign says is a record for fundraising during the same period in an Iowa governor’s race.

  • According to the campaign, Sand received more than 49,300 donations from over 26,800 contributors across all 99 Iowa counties. The campaign said nearly 95% of contributions were $100 or less and more than two-thirds came from Iowa donors.

  • National election forecasters rate the race as competitive. The Cook Political Report projects Iowa’s 2026 gubernatorial election as a toss-up, while Sabato’s Crystal Ball and Inside Elections see the campaign as leaning Republican.
